Maternal Tetanus Campaign Launched In Jonglei
The Ministry of Health in conjunction with the World Health Organization (WHO) and some other agencies have launched a maternal tetanus elimination campaign in Jonglei state. 19 May 2013 By Jacob Achiek Jok BOR, 18 May 2013 [Gurtong] – The UNICEF health and nutrition officer, Garang Kur Apiu Garang has said that the vaccination process will target women of child bearing age and aims to eliminate maternal tetanus in South Sudan by 2015. Garang said that the campaign will cover five counties of Bor, Twic East, Fangak, Nyirol and Akob adding that it is the second round which started on 17th May in Bor County and on the 20th they will start in the other counties and will continue for seven days until May 25. Kur said that their teams succeeded to immunize 236,453 women of child bearing age that form 55% in round one conducted in February but because of the quality of vaccination, the counties which have not reach 50% were considered to be given vaccination next year. He says that those counties who have reach 75%-80% are being vaccinated to reach the third round which will be in December 2013. Kur figures that the cumulative target in the five counties is either 215 or 420 women of child bearing age. He said that all girls who are going to be the future mothers shall come up to the vaccination centres adding that most of the centres are in the churches, schools and in the command places. He said that the vaccination will prevent deaths of the mothers after delivery. “My message is that all girls, women of child bearing age should turn up to the centres for vaccination in the centres we have targeted and we will have vaccination [on] Sunday in most of the churches,” he said.
