Government Embarks On Mass Vaccination Following Measles Outbreak In Malakal The Ministry of Health together with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) started conducting a mass measles vaccination campaign targeting over 31,303 children between the age of 6 months to 5 years in Malakal, Dr Makur Kariom, the Undersecretary said. 05 October 2013
*JUBA, 4 September 2013 [NASS]- *10 out of 15 suspected measles cases reported from the state’s main referral hospital tested positive during the period of the last one month. Those affected are between the age 6-18 months and they continue to receive treatment at the Malakal Teaching Hospital Hospital, the Dr. Makur said. While making the announcement, Dr. Makur urged all the citizen of South Sudan to ensure their children under the age of 5 are immunized. He reiterated the commitment of the government in containing the outbreak and said a national and state measles taskforce to coordinate the interventions response has been formed. In other related development Dr Makur met in his office the Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Botswana president Hon. Eric Molale. The two discussed areas of cooperation between the two countries particularly in the health sector. Hon. Molale on his part noted the challenges the country is facing in the implementation of the 2013, September corporation agreement with the republic of Sudan saying a successful implementation would bring the much needed development. Dr Makur appealed to the Government of Botswana to help the young country by building capacity of its medical staff. He said this would strengthen them to deliver better health services to the people of South Sudan.
