Wau citizens accuse government soldiers of extorting money at checkpoints WAU (19 Jan.) Citizens in the southern part of Wau town have accused government forces manning checkpoints of extorting money from civilians travelling along the Wau-Baggari road. Speaking to Radio Tamazuj yesterday, several citizens said that the SPLA soldiers have been imposing high taxes and fees on travellers without receipts, saying they sometime ask one person to pay about 150,000 SSP.The complaining citizens called upon the relevant authorities in Wau State to look into the matter in the state. For his part, Bona Gudnisio, state minister of information, admitted that there are unlawful practices happening near Wau town, saying they had a discussion on the matter during a workshop on peace in the area recently.
