Amnesty International calls for release of detained ex-governor Elias Waya

JUBA (19 Jan.)

Human rights organization Amnesty International is calling for the release
of ousted governor of Wau State Elias Way Nyipuoc who has remained in
detention in South Sudan’s capital Juba without charge or trial.

The rights group said in a statement seen by Radio Tamazuj today that Elias
Waya Nyipuoc should either be charged with a recognised offence and
presented before a competent court or immediately released.

It further called for bringing an end to arbitrary arrests and detentions
by the South Sudan military and initiate prompt, effective and impartial
investigations into military detention practices.

The right group urged the relevant authorities to ensure Elias Waya
Nyipuoch has access to a lawyer.

Elias Waya, former governor of Wau state, was summoned to Juba by President
Salva Kiir on 23 June 2016 and was relieved of his position as governor the
following day.

According Amnesty International, Elias was arrested by military police on
26 June 2016 and detained at Giyada Military barracks. He was then
transferred to Bilpam military headquarters on 21 October 2016.
