Indeed free software should run well on old hardware. Thus
source packages should have as few dependencies as possible,
GUI-programs provide alternative console binaries, and
high-compatibility binaries (early 586, 486, 386) including
Win32 binaries running on almost everything (minimized or old
Linux via Wine, ReactOS, DOS, and even Windows 98) be a standard.
