it means that a child exited.  when that happens, a SIGCHLD is sent to
the parent, who'll accept the signal, then spawn a new child.

hrm.  I'll pump some more test messages through on my end and see if I
can't reproduce this.  If it stops there, the child looks like it dies,
which would then do the sigchld, etc.  <grumble>
