The gray scale look also has the look/feel of a postmark.

I work as the IT guy in a mechanical group (robotics) so this logo appeals 
to me in the same way the machined aluminum in the shop does. I 
particularly like the back/grey/silver shuriken but recognize the desire 
for integrating Apache's colors. Perhaps an Apache-colored sample 
integrated with the shading of the 3rd (monochrome) sample would be in 
order. The result might look like tungsten or bismuth with its metallic 
rainbow sheen.
