The spam I was trying to catch doesn't seem to be going through the rules I added. What else do I have to do?
I'd start off with a run of spamassassin --lint to make sure you don't have a typo.
After that, if it still doesn't work check the debug output with spamassassin -D --lint.. Is it really reading the local.cf and user_prefs files you think it is? the top of the debug output can be quite revealing here.
