... most people run a helper program such as amavisd-new or mailscanner that calls spamassassin, as well as any virus scanners, then does what you want with the mail (reject, discard, quarantine, etc.).

I had this problem too, couldn't run spamassassin on the box running SMTP so I put some scripting in to pipe messages through spamd on another machine. It's a bit slow but works fine. I had things easy since both machines were running linux. You might find it easier to put some sort of SMTP server and at least one mailbox on the FreeBSD machine.
