I looked closer at the logic in amavisd and it has a second line that
may shed some light on the problem -

    defined($smtp_handle)
      or die "Can't connect to $relayhost port $relayhost_port, $!";

Using Amavisd-new-2.1.0

Line 3743 in amavisd says  -  defined($smtp_handle)

no log for amavisd in /var/log

Just looked at maillog, even a cron process I have running to email a
log to me from the SA box cant get past line 3743.
