I think I understand defunct processes well enough, but perhaps I wasn't very clear in my description. The qmail-spamd process is defunct, and the parent spamdyke process is hung. Spamdyke is apparently waiting for i/o from openssl, but that's somewhat of a guess. In my description I was lumping the two processes together, as a logical unit of work, which was perhaps erroneous.
