I have just acquired a government surplus SPARCStation 2 with 64MB of RAM. I have run
Linux on Intel machines for about 3 years and have a basic knowledge of UNIX. I am
interested in running Linux on this SPARC machine. My first problem is to obtain a
new NVRAM chip; I have read Mark Henderson's SUN NVRAM/hostid FAQ and feel comfortable
that I could accomplish the procedures he describes. Does anyone have some good
advice on where to obtain the NVRAM chip and/or battery I will need? Also, for
networking, this machine has only an AUI port; is it possible to get a 10BaseT/2 card
for these machines? Or perhaps there is an adapter from AUI to twisted-pair? I hope I
have not asked some stupid questions here, but I am quite low on the learning curve
with SPARC machines. I would be interested in any further advice anyone could pass on
about how they successfully setup an old SPARCstation 2 to run Linux. My goal would
be to use this machine as a print server (with SAMBA) or a !
small web server. Thank you.
