I've been trying to jump on the Linux bandwagon these last
few weeks, without much success. I'm trying to install Linux
on my system at home; a SparcStation 1+ with 64 MB of ram, 1 GB
hard drive, cgsix color framebuffer, and a standard Sun CD drive.
The system in question has had nearly every release of SunOS and
Solaris that has come out in the last ten years installed on it.
I'm fairly certain that the hardware is good. Obsolete perhaps,
but not flaky.
Here are the problems I've been having:
Debian - Can't even boot off of the CD. Near the end of
the boot process it starts displaying an error like
"SCSI error, resetting SCSI bus". This message starts
repeating and scrolls off of the screen. Nothing else
happens.
Redhat - Hangs during the installation process. Just after
I select the packages to install, nothing else happens.
It just sets there still displaying the blue background
screen. I've tried the installation process more times
than I can count. I've tried a variety of disk formats
and even different disk drives. Nothing I try makes any
difference.
Caldera - Well, I finally did get through the Caldera installation
process. It took quite a few attempts before it worked.
In order to get the Lizard timezone screen to work, I
had to select totally incorrect framebuffer/video
settings. I actually got Caldera installed, and now the
system will boot (in ten or fifteen minutes, but that's
another problem), but when I log in and the system
tries to start KDE, it displays a grey screen, then a blue
screen, then *no* screen. This probably has something to
do with the framebuffer/video selections I made during
the installation, but how do I fix it?
Is FreeBSD a better choice for these old SparcStations?
Thanks,
