Many thanks to everyone for their responses. I think I'm going to
give RedHat another try, using the workaround suggested below. I
haven't given up yet.
1) There is a known installation problem on the old SparcStations
in Redhat 6.0. The workaround is to select only the base packages
for installation, then install everything else after the installation
is complete.
2) The Framebuffer/Monitor selections should not make any difference
for the installation of Caldera.
3) It may take a long time for KDE to start in Caldera Linux. Perhaps
I wasn't waiting long enough.
4) To get around this Caldera/KDE problem, I can enter 'linux single'
at the SILO prompt, then change id:5:initdefault in /etc/inittab
to id:3:initdefault. This will stop the automatic startup of KDE.
5) The current SparcLinux kernel isn't quite stable yet. This should
change in the near future.
6) Memory Management with the old Sun4C architecture is a bit
problematic.
7) FreeBSD runs only on Intels and Alphas. NetBSD will run on a 1+.
