I have had this problem too. Seems that there is a message
in the RH6.0 installation book, appendix F, that states that
not all versions of Toshiba XM4101s will work for the installation
process (this is one of the internal SS5/SS20 cdrom drives).
Likewise, I have had failures with trying to use a Sony CDU-8012
unit on my SS2. HOWEVER, I believe that the Toshiba 3301b worked
with no problem with my ss2 installation.

SunOS and Solaris have drivers written to handle these
drives. Apparently there may not have been much work in
creating unique drivers for Toshiba and Sony that will work
with the sparc version of linux. Looking at the source
files for the cdrom drivers, there are unique drivers for
a few drives. It could be that unique drivers are needed
to be written for Sun cdrom drives.

Question is: can looking at solaris source code somehow help
in coding new cdrom drivers for linux without causing any
type of issues with Sun?
