I've been trying to get a HP Deskjet printer working with a SparcStation 5 and RedHat 6.0 for a week. So far, unsuccessfully. I have compiled my kernel with bi-directional parallel port support, hooked up the printer on the Sparc with a genuine Sun printer cable, and tried /dev/lp1 - 3. No joy printing either from lpd or cat'ting direct to the port. Someone suggested using /dev/bpp to talk to the parallel port, but I don't have such a device file. I have never understood major and minor device numbers, so if someone could tell me the correct mknod arguments to create /dev/bpp then I'd be eternally grateful. As a sidenote, could the kernel developers not provide some more documentation on new kernel features? It's no good adding support for some great new feature, if clueless cretins like me don't know squat about them. All I'm asking for is a brief entry for the config scripts - for instance, saying that audio chipset xyz is tyypically found on SparcStation x or Ultra y.
