Hello!
Newer SPARC machines come with a PCI bus. Is it possible to use any
cheap PCI framebuffer board with SparcLinux on such machines ?
Sun sells their framebuffers for big money... well sun sells
everything for big money :)
So, could I use a cheap (e.g.) S3 card as the primary framebuffer
und such a machine ?
At the very least you can't use a generic PCI graphics card
as the bootup console on the firmware monitor side. Because
the boot firmware on the Sun has no idea how to drive the card,
the Sun firmware on the PCI cards sold by Sun are what make them
different.
HOWEVER, you can do something like use a serial console and
run X or whatever from the booted system on the PCI card. We
only support ATI-Mach64 and Permedia2 based PCI cards at this
time though.
BTW, some of the PCI Sun's come with an ATI-Mach64 on the motherboard
already, Ultra5 and Ultra10 are examples. On these systems, this
whole issue is moot as you'll already have a framebuffer.
