Sounds like a hardware problem. Unlike windows, linux doesn't
experience the sort of passive bit-rot that leads to showstopper crashes
in less straightforward operating systems. "Reboot, if that doesn't
work, reinstall" doesn't hold true in most unices.
Try the basics - with the system turned off but well grounded (and you
should be grounded as well, for static discharge), reseat everything
that you can reasonably reseat.
If that doesn't help, try swapping out portions of the ram, you might
have a bad simm.
