Hello,

I use around 100 collections without problem but here are sentences from
someone from CA you should be aware of:

"
When you get a large number of Global Collections / Global Hierarchy
Collections you can reach a point that you exceed the monitoring
periodicity and start alarming on Global Collections engine----see the
TS article below.

GLOBAL COLLECTION CPU THRESHOLD EXCEEDED

SYMPTOMS:

Less-than optimal SpectroSERVER performance, abnormally disconnected
clients, and slow response times.

PROBABLE CAUSES:

A Global Collection update has taken a longer-than-normal amount of CPU
time, which might be contributing to the above symptoms.

RECOMMENDED ACTIONS:

1) Gauge the severity of the performance impact by looking at how long
the GC update took( see the event ). If it took 5010ms and the
threshold is 5000ms, then there is minimal impact... ), and how many
occurrences there are.

2) Optimize Global Collection search criteria. It is important to try
and narrow down the scope of the search using simple comparison on
simple attributes. Order is important, as the criteria is processed
top-down. String comparisons and comparisons on calculated attributes
can be expensive, if the comparison needs to be done across a large
number of models. It is usually best to first limit the scope of the
search by using model-class or model-type criteria. See the associated
event for details.

3) If you only occasionally see this alarm, it is probably just an
anomaly and should be cleared. You can also increase the
"gc_perf_cpu_threshold" setting in the $SPECROOT/SS/.vnmrc to reduce the
number of "false alarms". The default setting is 5000 milliseconds, and
can be increased as needed to baseline performance e in your particular
SPECTRUM environment.

4) If this Global Collection contains external attributes, the CPU time
calculation may not accurate and this could be a false alarm. You may
want to disable this alarm by modifying the EventDisp entry for
Event00010f20."

Kind regards,

Subject: [spectrum] Number of Global Collections?

How many global collections are most people using in Spectrum, and is
there a recommendation as an upper limit on that number, given that they
are for the most part dynamic collections?

We are thinking about undertaking a Spectrum re-organization project
which essentially mean the addition about a significant number of Global
collections (potentially around 1000, or 5 per building on campus). We
would then remove the global collections view from most people's
permissions and just give them the Hierarchical view of the global
collections to make it manageable. I'm concerned that this may be too
many for Spectrum to easily handle, and I was wondering if anyone else
had any experience with large numbers of collections.

Thanks for any feedback.
