My thoughts on the issue,

CA is most likely investigating the incrased interest in open source
solutions with these types of survey's. In the Linkedin group "Spectrum
professionals" a discussion was recently posted regarding the guys
behind MicroMuse and Riversoft (www.rivermuse.org
<http://www.rivermuse.org/> ) than now is aiming at the fault management
market with Open Source alternatives.

All software development companies will feel a increased threat from
open source alternatives in the future and a good strategy in how to
handle the situation is vital for survival. Even if Spectrum is well
ahead technically than any open source alternative within it's area,
forming a strategy is needed - today.

Note that even big players are releasing the products in open source.
There are many examples. Why? Well, it's both a PR trick and a way of
handeling the threat. What if for example IBM have plans to release
their complete suite of management products as open source. Even if
their networking tool ("Tivoli Precision") isn't much to compare against
Spectrum, it may be a well preformed PR trick than gain trust in a
future for it - were everybody are invited to evolve the product.

To quote the character Mouse in the movie Matrix from 1999: - "We live
in exciting times".

It's friday, have a great weekend!
