It depends which attributes need to be updated. I believe delete and rediscover is the only way to update ALL attributes. For example if a device has been changed to a different model type the only way to fix that is to delete and rediscover. Have you tried the update commands?

I have to delete the old device and then discover the new device to get all the attributes updated. My colleagues have changed a lot of devices without following this procedure. So I have to find out which devices they have changed the past 10 months and delte them and dicover all of them as new.
