Hum, that's strange ... as i remember, modem_run doesn't stay in background
with this version. Anyway, it's known that sometimes all the traffic is
stopped : it can be due to a lost of sync that we didn't include in this
version and the current one either ... but i should do it soon. (as soon as
i am back with my modem !)

Another way to reconnect is to killall ppp && killall pppoa2
then just restart pppoa2 and ppp
But i can't really tell you much as i don't use and develop that version
anymore.

I think there were -d mode with this version ... but be carefull because it
may dump all the trafic that goes to/from ppp and the modem !
You can also add #define debug in the files ... but i don't know if it will
help.
