Until recently, I only ever got the June 2001 -BSD- release to
work at all. So that could be problem number 1.

I'm on 4-STABLE, and I did a make world + mergemaster mid-August,
which might have helped. But wait...

If you mean cvsup your FreeBSD OS source, I'd hang fire and
try this first (which might be what you actually meant!):

Do an anonymous CVS checkout of the speedtouch tree and
build and install as normal. Shutdown your BSD box and
unplug the manta for 30 seconds. If you unplug without
killing modem_run you might get a panicked BSD box! Power
up.

I'm at work now but if you like I can let you have exactly
what I use if you think it might help.
