Yes I've done some homework and found the link which is supposed to be
the definitive Mandrake8.2 guide.

Before, I was following the FAQ and doing things by hand, but somehow
the Mandrake tool draknet in the MCC should be able to set up everything
for you. Its a very buggy procedure, and after it is finished you still
have to modify /etc/ppp/peers/adsl for the correct vpi and vci, because
draknet will leave them blank. And perhaps also your CHAP secrets file.
And you will also need to have mgmt.o in /usr/share/speedtouch if you
don't have 'Commercial CD1'. Make the directory if it doesn't exist and
copy it there from the Alcatel files.

This is the original post that got me optimistic:

I followed these directions to the letter and they didn't work. Although
they might work for you?

But just today I found a few other alternative techniques that seem more
promising. I can't try them anymore as I have given up on Mandrake 8.2.
I am in purgatory (Microsoft Windows) before switching to SUSE. But
please let me know if any of them work, especially #2, as it can save me
a lot of trouble...

1) Changing speedtouch.sh

2) Disabling certain Mandrake services

3) Press cancel instead of OK in the MCC after setting up everything

4) Download Gnome tools for connecting

Happy hacking
