What is really pppd version?
It could be 2.4.0, 2.4.1, 2.4.2, 2.4.3, 2.4.4 with beta derivatives but not
2.4.b1
Did you modprobe pppoatm before calling pppd to start?
This is necessary on some pppd version or on a version that originaly load
pppoatm module but where pppd have been specially patched to remove this
automatic facility to load pppoatm module.

says "authentication failed". (even though I used the noauth command in my
speedtch script) Additionally ntp reports that ntp.ubuntu.org cannot be
found. Also DHCP persistently is trying to do something with eth0 - why, I
don't know. (yes I did use defaultroute and pppoatm.so in my script just as
the instructions said to)
