Just because I like playing devil's advocate; you have
to admit there are other issues not including the
extra $500 in price.
I could be wrong, but when I worked in hardware, the
stand-up oiled 2-stage compressors had to be
hardwired, which is fine so long as you have a spare
220 volt circuit and either be confident in your home
electrical skills or have a good buddy that is an
electrician.

The footprint of the stand-up units is actually
smaller than the horizontal roll-around type, but it
is a lot taller, and you can't just roll it under a
workbench or back into the patio (if you don't have a
garage) when you're done using it. Some people just
don't have that kind of space or even have a garage.
And the last issue (mind you, it's been years since
I've been in hardware and things might be different
now), but there were issues with laying the upright
models down even for shipping. So you couldn't just
strap the thing on to your roof rack. Extensive
lashing had to be done to stand it up in the back of a
pick-up whenever we sold one.

So, figure you've got an extra $500-$600 and possibly
money for delivery, money to pay an electrician to
atleast wire it, if not install a 220 volt outlet
nearby where it needs to sit almost indefinately.
