Thanks to all that responded with suggestions and support. After spending a couple
of hours under the bonnet yesterday, I have the car running much better. Not quite
perfect, but good enough that I can daily drive it and deal with the residual problem later (like
in 5 months when it gets warm again!)


I wish I could tell you which one of you suggested the actual solution, but I made a number
of changes/adjustments/tweaks and I'm not sure which one actually fixed it. Possibly there were
actually a number of minor things wrong that added up to one major driveability issue. One
strange thing I did notice was that the distributor clamp was bent so even with it tightened
down all the way, everytime I fussed around with the ignition, I was knocking the timing out!
