The problem with many of these gibberish messages is that they include "pictures" with a size of 0 (yes, zerő!) bits. When opening such a message, the e-mail program contacts the link with the 0-bit picture and in doing so also sends the IP-address to the spammer. The victim may now notice it, but the spammer has another valid IP-address to add to his collection...
