From an insurance point of view on new system sprinkler systems I recommend
to the client to install schedule 40 pipe for anything less then 2.5 ". We provide sprinkler leakage coverage and depending on the amount of water damage can pay claims. The pharma and electronics industries do not take much damage to get past any deductible. Also I have a concern for MIC and want the client to have a system that will not be out of service for repairs. Sometimes the contractors will question the requirement. I tell the client my views and let them decide if they think the increased cost is warranted. Based on my experience about 75% spend the extra $$ for schedule 40 pipe.

In a warehouse application we pay close attention to the adequacy of the sprinkler system. If it is not adequate the client will pay more $$ for insurance or perhaps we will not insure them. However, in the insurance world this can vary from one carrier to another. You always have an underwriter who plays the odds and is willing to write the coverage where we may not.
