Hello Group,

Yesterday one of our technicians performed maintenance on a Victaulic F758
pre action valve. It was leaking from the auxiliary clapper piston. The
building owner had previously shut off the water because of the heavy leak.

After installing the piston renewal kit and putting the valve back together,
the local Fire Marshal said he would not approve the maintenance done unless
the valve itself was hydro tested. He wanted us to open piping above the
valve, cap it off on the system side and apply 200 psi for 2 hours to the
valve. The valve was placed back in service and operated correctly. It did
not leak, and held system working pressure after our work.

It took my Tech by surprise and he was not prepared to hydro the valve on
that service call. He argued against it because it was not a modification
to the system, only maintenance to some gaskets. The Fire Marshal was
adamant and insisted it must be done. Now he has to return to the site
after Christmas and perform this hydro test.

Has anyone else in the group had experience with hydro testing a valve only,
and is there some danger to damaging the pre action valve gaskets in some
way? Does it conform to NFPA 13, or 25?

Any opinions, pro or con will help.
