I don't know of any generic figures to use. I would assume you have some
idea of the HP required for a given fire pump application. Review a number
of different manufacturer's engine options to arrive at a ballpark figure.
It is not that significant of a range, maybe 5-10 gpm on the low end to 30+
of the high end. Working on the industrial side, I haven't typically tried
to cut tank sizing that close to worry about diesel cooling water
consumption. If you actually have an incident that uses an entire tank water
supply, will the loss expectancy be any different if the supply is depleted
a few minutes earlier - I would tend to doubt it. I'm actually more
concerned with the growing pump size of fire apparatus, particularly
municipal pumpers where 2000 gpm pumps (or larger) are becoming quite common
(and fire apparatus pumps are fairly conservatively rated). Luckily the fire
service hasn't entirely figured out that you have to supply that large pump
with adequately sized and number of supply lines. Nonetheless, the FD can
pump some significant water and I often look at the impact of FD use beyond
typical hose stream allowances when sizing water supplies, especially when
large volume deluge systems are involved.

Subject: Diesel Pump Cooling Water Consumption

Dear All,

To size a dedicated Fire Water Tank Capacity, on the basis of NFPA,

-Do we need to add the "Diesel Fire Pump cooling water consumption", on top
of Sprinkler+Hose demand?

- If we need to add the cooling water consumption, what can be the criteria
(Engine HP, pump capacity, etc.) to estimate the cooling water consumption,
if we want to use a generic figure, not based on a specific engine
manufacturer?

Kind Rgds.
