You've got a non-combustible plenum conveying comfort air. The space is
neither occupied or used for storage. The air-handler should have smoke
detectors in the supply and return ductwork. Generally the plenum
chambers are usually consider part of the equipment. I would think that
NFPA 13, 2002 8.14.1.2.2 would easily apply.

Subject: Supply and return air plenums

I posted this awhile back, but for some reason didn't get anything from
the forum for a period of about two weeks. So I'm not sure if it got
posted or if anyone replied. Anyway, here it is again:

A mechanical penthouse has non-combustible supply and return air
plenums, which are separated into compartments with filters. One
compartment has a 150 hp supply air fan and another, a 50 hp return air
fan. Both have electric motors. The compartments are fairly big, approx.
30 ft x 20 ft x 15 ft high. Should these air plenums be sprinklered? Any
code sections to justify?
