Todd,

Wouldn't worry too much about the head guard. Fork lifts or pallet loads
handled by a fork lift would just wrap the guard around the broken head.

The obstruction issue is not as easy. A 20 ft. ESFR should not be
necessary for 8-9 ft. of storage under a duct. I know it's not
technically correct but I would put some 1/2" heads under the duct.

There is another approach I have always wanted to try. What if the duct
were wrapped in a combustible carton of some sort with wood pallets
strapped to the underside? Wouldn't it be like multi-row rack storage
and not require heads beneath?

Subject: protecting ESFR

I'm working on a project in an ESFR warehouse where additional
sprinklers need to be provided beneath a duct. The duct is about 8-9
feet off the floor in the 20 ft warehouse. My plan is to install 3 ESFR
sprinklers below the duct. The question I have is about protection of
the sprinkler and obstructions. I'm assuming that installing a sprinkler
guard per 6.2.8 (2002) in not allowed. What other options are out there?
This space is occupied by some palletized storage and forklift parking,
so damage is a possibility.
My original thought was upright ESFRs on sprigs, but that may not work
in this case. Thoughts?
