Sorry I think we're getting a bit off track. The main 80k is a II-B basic
steel building. The 11K is a basic wood frame pole barn V-B. It's not
archaic materials. The walls, structure, etc. have 0 rating. It does look
like it complies with table 602 of the IBC if it were built today. II-B and
V-B have a rating of exterior walls requirement of 0 hours for 10'-30'.

But this does lead to a semantics question in the water supply. If it is a
common sense two buildings (i.e. most people would call it 2 if shown a
picture) vs. a code calling it one building even though there is no physical
connection does it make a difference in whether one can jump the gap with a
single system in the two buildings.

What I'm really focusing on is the requirements for water supplies in campus
type environments in light of potentially new issues in 13 which either
don't exist and I remember some other issue wrong or I can't find them. And
for what it's worth neither are likely candidates for ever being sold off to
separate owners. The II-B, V-B is an integrated manufacturing company. The
pump buildings are a county govt complex.

Chris,

Aside from the issue of structural integrity (a requirement for a fire
wall) take a look at the publication "Guidelines for determining fire
resistance ratings of building elements". Part II of that publication
provides determination methods for archaic materials.

When it's not fully involved with fire sure that's adequate.

As an existing condition I don't know. It's been that way for 15 years.
The FM left it as a separate issue in the analysis for sprinklers in the
new addition. The walls are unrated but there are no openings.

is 15ft adequate separation to consider them separate buildings?
