Rod,

The picture I had was the typical two-tier cell block surrounding a
high ceiling dayroom with the walkway you're addressing being the
second level, cantilevered walkway that goes to the stairway. This
would essentially be a high ceiling single floor with stacked
bedrooms. Is this correct? If this is the case I still think your
solution is viable. I'd check the Cds as others have suggested but if
I recall properly, barring no change since the last time I was in jail
(working--not as a guest of the county/state/fed), the walkway was
always exempt from sprinklers. Per 13 if the horizontzl obstruction is
under 48" in at least one dimensionit then it doesn't require
protection below. Whether it is solid or grated or slatted or
honeycombed or anything else you can think of is irrelevant.

I would check the CD's to see what the construction type is first. If
the facility is more than 2 stories, the floor/ceiling assembly is
required to be rated and the open grated concept is probably not
feasible. Protected construction may also be required due to the
allowable area.

Subject: open grate flooring

I am working on a large jail project where the architect has asked me to
provide value engineering ideas. One of the things that I am considering
bringing to his attention is the possibility of turning their upper cell
walkway into an open grate flooring of 4' or less. I was pretty sure
that this would eliminate the need for sprinklers under these walkways
but I wanted to substantiate it before I presented it. NFPA 13 02
edition 8.5.5.3.1 states " Sprinklers shall be installed under fixed
obstructions over 4ft wide such as ducts, decks, open grate flooring,
cutting tables, and overhead doors". Am I correct in assuming that if
these "floors" are 4' or less that sprinks will not be required? I
thought that I remembered that there were other requirements such as
percentage or size of openings similiar to the meshing in nursing home
curtains but I can't find it anywhere. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
