But if quoted correctly the 7.10.1.1.3 sentence is refering to the flows in the additional standpipes without including the previously mentioned "most remote standpipe" and therefore the unqualified "total" (Is "The Total" in the definitions section?) as written refers to the total for the additional standpipes. This interpretation may not be what was intended, but it is how it reads. If total is meant to be "system total" then the 14 standard needs to be cleaned up a bit in this section. I don't have the standard in front of me but I think it also states the "not to exceed" clause before it goes on in a subsequent section to say addtional standpipes are to flow 500 gpm instead of 250 gpm for large floor areas. That might mean the "not to exceed" applies to only the totals for 250 gpm standpipes.

1000 gpm total for ALL standpipes.

That is my understanding of it.

Subject: Standpie Calc

Below is a direct quote from NFPA 14 2007 edition.

7.10.1.1.1 For Class I and Class III systems, the minimum flow rate for the hydraulically most remote standpipe shall be 500gpm, and the calculation
procedure shall be inaccordance with 7.10.1.2

7.10.1.1.3 The minimum flow rate for additional standpipes shall be 250 gpm
per standpipe, with the total not to exceed 1250gpm or 1000 gpm for
buildings sprinklered throughout

My question is for a sprinklered building what is the total standpipe system flow rate 1000gpm or 1500gpm? The "total" referred to in 7.10.1.1.3 can be interrupted as referring to only the additional standpipes. So you would
have 1000gpm in additional standpipes and 500 for the most remote?

Thoughts???
