Egoistically, I have to admit a twinge of regret when I read that. I'm
assuming that the reference is to a "Tri-Water" design, which came and
went pretty quickly from about 1984-1988 or so. Basically, it's a combo
HVAC supply/return and fire sprinkler system that utilizes two sprinkler
mains for the supply/return to the cooling tower and then alternating
supply/return branch lines off of each main that allow heat pumps to be
place between pairs and connected via flex connectors with throttling
valves on both sides.

The technology had at least two inherent flaws, one is that the
patent-holder specified a throttling valve that wasn't really suited to
the application - as I recall it was a valve that Nibco would have
otherwise recommended for either full open or closed tight service and
the heat pump flow rates were infinitely variable. The other problem is
that in order to do a sprinkler T.I. you have to shut down the entire
system, and all other tenants in the same system zone (or floor) lose
their heat/AC while the system's down. Thus began the ritual of
night-work only on Tri-Water systems.

I mentioned my regrets; this is because I thought I had designed the
only high-rise Tri-Water system anywhere. There are twin 20-story
towers here in San Diego that I did in about 1986 and, until today, I
was not aware of any others ... does anyone know whether or not they're
still in business?

Is this combination Sprinkler/Heating system common?
