Standard practice in most large industrial and some commercial that I've had
experience with. Most of the time looking at a stand alone building located
in an advantageous location with respect to the water supply (tank,
reservoir, municipal) and other factors. Doesn't typically make senses to
bring a set of larger undergrounds to and from a protected building to
locate the pump there since you are supplying other buildings through a
private fire main system. I have seen the pump(s) in one of the protected
buildings in older industrial in more urban settings with very limited yard
space and in more urban commercial where again there is limited yard space
for a stand-alone pump house.

As others have stated, this is typically a single owner scenario. I have
been involved with industrial sites where buildings/property was sold to a
different owner and fire protection water supply remained with the larger
industrial complex. Generally that's a problematic arrangement from what
I've seen, but I've seen AHJ/water purveyors sign off on it to promote
re-development of older industrial sites. Those are the arrangements where
you spend more time with lawyers then with the fire protection aspects of
the project.

Subject: Single Fire Pump Serving Multiple Buildings

Is there something in the IFC or IBC 2006 or NFPA 20 which would
prohibit a booster fire pump from supplying multiple buildings on the
same property? Would it make any difference if the fire pump was in a
stand alone building or inside a two hour enclosure of one of the
protected buildings?

The scenario is a developer with three detached 200K sq ft spec
warehouse buildings with ESFR systems, all on one property, a good
public water supply but not quite good enough. All buildings are
supplied from a single tap to the public water system with a DDC device
in a vault.

NFPA 13-07 8.2.5 refers to "systems" or "risers" and I don't see the
intent for it to include a booster pump supply.
