It sounds small enough to fall under 8.6.7 ceiling pockets rules (2002
edition)

This is more accurate. "S" represents the existing sprinkler. The
valance is 8-10" off the window and is 8-10" deep depending on the room.
The result is an unprotected space of about 8 sqft along the wall.

Not sure if this pictograph will come out or not but if it does, is that
an accurate depiction of what you have?

In either case I'd treat the area between the window and soffit/valance
as a pocket, you've got a sprinkler there you say. Then just examine
the spacing of the sprinkler on the opposite side of the obstruction,
treating it as if it was a wall and 1/2-Space accordingly verifying the
spacing requirements for ceiling sprinkler obstructions to make sure the
area below the soffit was covered.

You didn't say how deep and wide the soffit was and how far it was off
the window (8"?)or how far the other head is off the soffit.

Subject: valance obstruction

Ladies and gentlemen,

This one is stumping the engineer, arch, AHJ and now me.

We have a Hilton high rise motel with soffits around the perimeter of
the rooms with res pendent sprinklers on opposing sides. The owner has
instructed the GC to install 1X8 and some 1x10 boards vertically from
wall to wall under the soffits on the walls adjacent to exterior walls
with windows as a valence. The sprinklers will all be obstructed
according to the book as they are only inches away from the valence.

The AHJ has suggested that if the valences are 8" deep and 8" off the
exterior wall the soffit rule may apply. I disagree in principle because
they are not soffits and will not behave like soffits in the event of a
fire (thanks to Roland's input on past issues).

The valences were not on the drawings and the building is slated to open
in
2 weeks.

The question is that if the owner had waited until he got the CO and
done this, or if he had used normal valences would this be an issue? Is
this more of a decorative item that we can not predict or control, or is
this really an obstruction?

What do we do with this one? I am hoping that some of you with sprinkler
testing experience can help with this one.
Greg
