AMEN!! I wear both hats...An FPE by day and an AHJ part time for my city. The kind of thing we discuss here is usually the bigger items that when we catch them are definitely in the "What the hell were they thinking?" category.
But if you did the day to day inspection work you would be absolutely stunned at the gross stupidity, ignorance, and/or blatant disregard for many of the fire regulations. Sure bailing wire is not a proper pipe hanger...but will probably work anyway. The file cabinet partially blocking a marked exit door which is also padlocked is the stuff that gets my boxers in a bunch. As an inspector I only have so much time and although I will eventually get them all, I have to spend the majority of my time on the immediately dangerous to life and health stuff. After being in FP design/engineering for over 20 years AND operating as a Sprinkler Contractor, no one would want me as an inspector. It used to make me so mad to see my competitors who got away with things that were downright ridiculous. Then I knew why they were so cheap. But what really was surprising was the lack of concern on the part of owners and some building officials. Craig L. Craig, Come work with us inspectors. Someone once told me I should write a book. I replied if I did it would be categorized "fiction" since no one would believe these things really go on. The sad part is that there are those that understand the critical nature of fire protection work and those that treat it otherwise. I got an e-mail this morning asking about a thrust restraint on an underground installation. This is one of those where I wish we could post pictures because it's almost unbelievable. At the end of what looks like a 8" or 10" main there is a metal fence post driven into the ground. This is one of those green ones that you use to string wire between like for a garden or for livestock. About 3-4 foot behind it, along the pipe run, there's another. Between the two it looks like some 12 ga. Solid wire tying them together. OH, That'll work! NOT! Ok, we know the installer was definitely not following that whatchmacallit FPnA code or whatever it is, but also who approved the installation? The bigger question comes to mind of whether the rest of the system was restrained properly. Someone does not have an enviable task ahead of them. What a way to start the day. Just unbelievable.
