NFPA 13 states the following. 8.15.1.2.10 Concealed spaces where rigid materials are used and the exposed surfaces have a flame spread index of 25 or less, and the materials have been demonstrated not to propagate fire when tested in accordance with NFPA 255, Standard Method of Test of Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials, extended for an additional 20 minutes in the form in which they are installed, shall not require sprinkler protection.
I have a foam insulation sprayed on the walls of an otherwise non-combustible concealed space, that has a 25 or less flame spread that is marketed as flame retardant in accordance with ASTM E84 (same as the NFPA 255 test). Can anyone educate me on what "and the materials have been demonstrated not to propagate fire when tested in accordance with NFPA 255, Standard Method of Test of Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials, extended for an additional 20 minutes in the form in which they are installed" means? Considering that the tunnel test measures materials installed on the tunnel ceiling so I am not sure what this code language means. Can anyone shed some light/committee members? Would you accept the material in a non-combustible concealed space? Thanks Peter A.
