Do what you feel is best in your heart and sleep well at night. But use
every opportunity to educate those AHJ's and the smarter they get the easier
it will be for you. Fitters and designers are not the only one's we train.

Thom,
Meeting with the AHJ to work this out would certainly be the best
solution.
The unfortunate fact is that the majority of the AHJ's in Greg's area
(northwest Florida) know very little about the code when it comes to fire
sprinklers. It is difficult to discuss these kinds of issues when much of
their decision making is based on what they want or feel instead of what
the
codes and standards actually say. I'm sure it is a familiar situation to
many on the forum in all areas of the country.
This is why the forum is so necessary for many of us. Like it or not, we
end up having to ask questions, get the most info and insight available,
and
then do the best that we can to follow the right path.

Non-combustible Porte chiere's don't require protection, Non-combustible
projections and covered walkways not used for storage don't require
protection, seems like a visit with the AHJ could resolve the fact that
its
"attached", and falls somewhere in between those two.

Situation:
Non combustible overhang with nothing underneath it. It will only be
used to hand wash cars.
2 questions: Protection required?
What hazard?
