Speaking of proposals. NFPA 13 is accepting them until Oct 5.

If you see something that isn't right. submit a change. Simply saying section X.y.z is not right won't do - you have to suggest new text. For instance on Leif's question, one should suggest changing one remote area to match the other saying the hazard appears similar and the difference makes no sense. Then the committee will at least to consider what they really want to say.

Keep in mind that the TC will proceed as if the document is perfect unless told otherwise. Forms are in the back of 13 and the NFPA web page.

PS: the last 231 series standards (solid pile, racks, tires, paper etc) were released in 1998 and the TC's were ended with the 99 edition of 13 consolidating the storage criteria. A new NFPA 231 was created on Fire Protection for Warehouse but it was dropped after 2 cycles (I think) - maybe 3 yrs ago.

Leif,

The committee was eliminated when the separate storage standards were rolled into 13, quite some time ago. The 13 committee simply copied the standard as it existed, with the exception of fixing a few glaring errors. TIAs are issued only for very critical issues, as they don't always get to the right people. A formal interpretation is issued only when someone requests it, which apparently hasn't happened. The only way the standard can be changed is for someone to submit a proposal during the revision cycle. This issue doesn't seem to have caused enough confusion for it to be brought to the attention of the committee so far. Yocertainly can (and should) either request a formal interpretation or a proposal to change the standard.

As I said, portable racks are simply racks, that aren't fixed to the floor and their normal configuration is multiple row. A fire can't tell whether they move or not.
