Probably a separate issue, since you indicate that you have a glass wall that is required to be rated, but if you are in the wide world of IBC land, as George C. points out (beat me to the punch), you may want to note IBC section 404.5 (2003 ed.), which addresses specifically the separation of atriums. 404.5 Enclosure of atriums. Atrium spaces shall be separated from adjacent spaces by a 1-hour fire barrier wall. Exceptions:
1. A glass wall forming a smoke partition where automatic sprinklers are spaced 6 feet (1829 mm) or less along both sides of the separationwall, or on the room side only if there is not a walkway on the atrium side, and between 4 inches and 12 inches (102mmand 305 mm) away from the glass and so designed that the entire surface of the glass is wet upon activation of the sprinkler system. The glass shall be installed in a gasketed frame so that the framing system deflects without breaking (loading) the glass before the sprinkler system operates. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Eric G. I haven't looked up the code reference for this since I haven't had to convince someone to accept the idea; I've only seen it in the field on occasion. I have a glass wall that I need to be fire rated and I have a contractor telling me by code he can use a pendant head instead of a deluge head or a Tyco window sprinkler. The only code I see that possibly address this is 21.20.1.2.1 and it only says you have to use automatic heads. Any help!!!!!
