Fran, Which of the 3 systems did the welding crew cut? Gregg

Dear colleagues,
A plant owner has a new sprinkler system. Installation started 2 years
ago. Final acceptance was approx. 6 month ago. All sprinkler piping is
(interior and exterior) hot dip galvanized steel. Some systems are dry,
some are wet and some contain water + 1% AFFF-concentrate.
A few month ago a mechanial crew was welding some process piping and
accidentally cut a sprinkler pipe.
The mechanics claim that a flash flame came out of the sprinkler pipe!
This caused some disturbance as you can imagine.
An investigation is going on since.
Recently someone with a lab told our client that MIC bacteria may have
produced combustible gas that could have been collected in the sprinkler
pipe.
Question: is there any chance that this can be true?
Or should we look for another cause?
