Well, there might be a few more items in the definition of a check valve
that could influence that. Sans a blockage and in normal operation, the
rainwater leaders on my house only allow flow in one direction, but they're
not check valves. And before you add that backup CAN occur, same can be said
with abnormal condition of a check valve, where a foreign object (blockage)
can lift the clapper off the seat and allow 2-way flow.

And they'd have to be LISTED or APPROVED as checks, like the prior
discussions on backflow preventors "not" being a check valve on a source of
supply.

Because a PRV acts like a check valve and the new ones are actually listed
that way. Water can only flow one way, so it IS a check valve.

valve.
