Head under soffit or light cove by definition. The sidewall was mounted above the light cove and sprayed over. It was not ideal, granted, but if you put the s/w under the cove you exceed the max distance from the deck. If you put the sidewall at the end of the light cove there is unprotected space behind the s/w that needs protecting and you still need a head under the cove plus there is the potential for delayed operation of the sidewall if the head behind and above the cove fuses first. We spent a good bit of time talking the people who test the heads and they may have even built a model and flowed it, I can not remember. Over 8" wide, you sprinkler below it. SSp would cover the blocked area of HSW spray. glc -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Greg McGahan Sent: Tuesday, February 26, 2008 8:21 AM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: obstructions below sidewalls We had the same situation in a condo and contacted the sprinkler manufacturer. In our case we put heads under the light cove to cover the "shadow" and the sidewall protected the center of the room. This was approved by the manufacturer as far as their input goes. The AHJ also accepted this. The latest is a light cove that sticks out 11" from the wall and is 8" below the sprinkler. I can't find anything in 13 that discusses or would relate to this. Most of the discussion in 8.7.5.2.1 related to "dry shadow" in front of and not underneath. Am I missing something? Any thoughts? Todd G.
