1. IBC 901.2 allows non-required partial systems if installed properly (and this doesn't mean the system has to be installed throughout the building to be considered installed properly). 2. IBC 508.2.3 allows partial systems in certain areas. 3. NFPA 101A is full of partial systems for various occupancies. 4. IBC Chapter 34 has point values for partial systems.
It would be incorrect to say that you must go all the way with sprinklers if you choose to sprinkler a corridor in a building that does not otherwise require sprinkler protection. Why don't you run the IBC Chapter 34 point values for this building and see if IBC 901.2 can be appropriately applied for the corridor sprinkler system? Maybe the AE has already done this and the attorney's phone number can be put back into the rolodex. Bill Brooks William N. Brooks, P.E. Just write a check and pay the attorney until he works it out. I guess the statement that bothers me is the drawings that says "sprinklers to be provided in corridors only. (per code)" The (per code) gets me. Like you said, I can pass on it but I want to learn. The building doesn't require any sprinklers at all. I've yet to see a protected mini-warehouse facility, even those built to be occupied for business purposes adjacent to storage units. If there's still a level of discomfort either pass on the job or put disclaimers on the drawings and bid stating that the sprinkler system does not comply with the intent of XYZ Code and Standards for a fully sprinkled facility and that you as the designer/installer will not guarantee it's function for the protection of the building, it's contents or occupants, blah, blah blah..... Maybe in another type of occupancy; but I have helped people move before and I have seen the partially filled plastic gas cans and lawnmowers, weedeaters and gas grill LP bottles, etc in these units. Scary to me.
