Thank you Ryan. This retrofit guide is really what I was looking for.
The ordinances are essentially lowering the threshold of what buildings
and size of buildings that need to be sprinklered and what triggered a
retrofit. Thanks for the help. I notice this is produced by the NFSA and
I am wondering if the AFSA has a white paper or something equivelant?

Subject: RE: City council to review sprinkler ordinance in Rapid City

Rod,

Without knowing the specific "sprinkler friendly" ordinances being
threatened it is difficult to recommend specific resources.

If the ordinances being attacked are related to fire sprinkler
retrofits, then you may find the fire sprinkler retrofit guide for
communities published by NFSA a good place to start. The link to the
.pdf document is
below:

http://nfsa.org/info/Retrofit_Guide_7-15-07.pdf

If the ordinances being attacked relate to residential structures, then
I have a number of resources that would be helpful. Also, I can connect
you with Roy Marshall, Executive Director of the Residential Fire Safety
Institute, who has extensive experience with residential ordinance
adoption and is willing to provide guidance to local jurisdictions who
need the help.

If you have any more specifics on the ordinances causing the most
concern that would be helpful.

Subject: City council to review sprinkler ordinance in Rapid City

I have been notifiied by our local fire marshall that the city council
is going to be doing a review of previously passed fire sprinkler
ordinances.
Essentially these ordinances were amendments of the IBC that were very
sprinkler friendly. A group of people lead by a code consultant expert
is leading the charge to rescind these. Does anyone have any ideas of
resources that I can put in our Fire Marshalls hands to help him in this
battle? We must win this one as we are well into the process of looking
at a residential ordinance as well. Thanks for your thoughts / ideas.
