Throw out the logic. If the corridor is a fire rated corridor then anything that compromises that rating needs to be provided with additional or alternative protection in order to maintain that rating throughout.
"What if" scenarios make great movies but the Codes are clear on the issue. Until the other sprinkler mfgrs come out with a comparable product, Tyco controls the market. Craig L. Second, we are assuming that a fire in a corridor is out of control and is going to break into the room adjacent to a rated glass wall. Third, we are assuming that the very same system that could not initially stop the fire, in the corridor or adjacent room, will stop the fire from penetrating the rated glass wall. That is a real leap of logic, and a hard sell. To make matters worse, Tyco is very proud of the WS sprinkler and prices them accordingly. Then we have to add the WS sprinkler hydraulic demand to our original calculations for the corridor and/or rooms adjacent. John R. O'Connor, National Fire Sprinklers, Inc. Actually, the only ways that I'm aware of are to use rated glass - VERY expensive - or window sprinklers. If you don't protect them, there's a limit to the maximum percentage of rated wall area that can be glazed openings, depending on whether it's one or two hours. Otherwise, to make an all-glass wall you would have to use sprinklers or rated glass block or glazing. We know how to do unrated and know how to do non-glass. So as long as you can prove that your sprinkler protection of the glazing provides a fire resistant rating equal to that of the wall, you're good to go. Craig L. Prahl, CET "listed" appears to be the key word here. I just received a phone call from a representative of Tyco and in essence this sprinkler is better technology and is an option and not mandatory.
